Replacement Window Handle: What's New? No One Is Talking About

Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are a fundamental component of your uPVC windows and should be matched to the frame. The spindle size is what determines whether your new uPVC handles will fit.

Use the table below as a quick guide to measure the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will help you choose the appropriate replacement window handle for your double-glazed window.

Espag Handle

Espag handles are the most commonly used design of handle used on upvc windows (they're often found in aluminium and timber too). The handles have a square spindle that extends from the back of the handle and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism that is on the window. By turning the handle, you control the mechanism that locks and unlocks the locking points around the window.

Window handles from Espag are available in a variety of options that differ according to the style you select and the purpose you'd like to achieve from them.  door handles  come with an option to push-button to lock the closed' position as well as key-locking (and non-locking with fire escape if needed). Many of them meet the Secure by Design specification to add an additional level of security. They also come with a variety of different spindle lengths, which can be adjusted using spindle sleeves that reduce the size of the protruding spindle.

Yale has examined the espagnolette handles we provide to ensure they are in line with the standards you would expect. They work with windows made of upvc, timber windows and frames made of aluminium. We offer a range of colours, and can match the handle with the hinges you have already.

Another crucial aspect of handles made from espagnolette is their step height. This is the distance from the top of the handle up to where it is placed on the frame, and it is essential to get it right to ensure a tight and secure fit. Most of our handle designs are 43mm between screw hole centres, which is the industry standard.

Like other types of handles you can choose between straight and Cranked designs. Cranked handles are perfect for situations where the espagnolette handle will be placed close to the frame's edge as they can give you more space to open the window.

Our range of upvc replacement handles includes a variety of finishes, styles and colors that will complement your home's decor, such as polished chrome, satin nickel and antique brass. Some of our products feature soft-close systems to minimize the noise your windows make when they close.

Cockspur Handle

The Cockspur Window Handle was created for manufacturers who wish to offer their customers an elegant and high-quality design. These handles can be used with either uPVC or aluminium windows. They function by incorporating a spur on the handle that locks over the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle is lockable, so that it can only be opened when it is pushed. This provides extra security. The handle is available in five different finishes and both left hand and right hand versions allowing the fabricator to cater for a wider variety of windows.

The cockspur window handles are supplied with 3 packing pieces with different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted to a broad range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the step size to create the desired distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle comes in both left and right handed versions with straight or curved nose options.

It is important to measure the height of your current handle before purchasing a new handle in order to ensure it will fit correctly. The wrong handle can cause a myriad of problems, including the inability for the window to be closed. This can be a nuisance for homeowners and can cause unnecessary stress.

A cockspur handle is that is found on older uPVC wood, aluminium and timber windows. These handles don't have any window locks integrated in contrast to the Espag handles which are used on modern windows. They also come with shootbolts or an Espagnolette bar lock.

The espagnolette (often shortened to 'espag') handle is the most popular handle that is found on new uPVC casement windows. When you turn the handle espagnolette it activates a Yale Encloser locking system which is more secure than a traditional handle, such as a cockspur or British standard. This is because when you turn the handle of the espagnolette it turns multiple locks in the window frame to secure it.

Handle by turning and tilting

These windows are popular among those who wish to increase the amount of airflow inside their home and also add a degree of security. As their name suggests, these windows have a tilt and turn feature that allows them to tilt at 90 degrees to provide the appearance of a small opening, or drop down to a hopper-style for full ventilation. This dual function also gives them a unique appearance that can create an impressive look to your double glazed window.

Tilt-and-turn windows are more complex than other double-glazed window styles that can increase the cost of installation. They require more components and require more labor. These windows are a worthwhile investment as they can add value and provide numerous advantages to your home.

A major benefit is that they allow you to clean windows from the inside without using ladders that are outside. This is perfect for those who live in high-rise buildings or flats as it removes the need to leave and the risk of falling from a high point. Tilt and turn windows offer additional security because windows lock when they are in a tilted or turned position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot access them from the inside.

Usually, you'll find handles like this often on European style windows, specifically those in Germany However, you can also get them installed in UK homes. The uPVC handle replacement is typically an a spindle-based model. It is made of 7mm spindles that are available in lengths of 38mm, 44mm, and 32mm. The handle's base also tends to be wider than other handles, which is why they are referred to as a  tilt safe window handle because it can only be rotated to open the window after it has been locked into either the closed or tilt position.

If you want to replace the uPVC tilt and turn window handle you must first take the handle off the window with a screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a backplate with a spring loaded. Simply lift the backplate and twist it to reveal two screw holes. You can measure the distance between the two screw holes by using a ruler or tape measuring device. This is typically 43mm from centre to centre. Once you've got your measurement, you can then order the proper size handle for your uPVC window.
